Sugar Coated EP: An Analysis

Gerald Spot, GSpot for short, dropped his first Evergreen EP last month, and all of the tracks have become overnight hits. Sugar Coated hits all the feels, whichever you’re in at the time there’s a song prescribed just for you!

The EP opens with ‘Floor.” Floor is an emotional anthem that anyone who has ever felt alone in the middle of the night can resonate with. Exploring themes of self-introspection and tiredness with the real world around you, Spot expresses a wish to go back to when he was a kid, before everything was so hard. The melodic rhythm and vocals lull the listener into feeling like they aren’t alone in how they feel, that there is at least one person out there who gets it. When asked about his process behind recording Floor, GSpot explained, “Floor, while not my favorite song, was the easiest to record. Depression comes in a variety of forms, so I hate to admit it sometimes but my brain likes to go to those dark places quite often so when I started recording this song it was all freestyled with no plan but I was in a bad mental state…”

Sugar Coated comes next, which is this reviewers (and GSpot himselfs)  favorite on the album. Sugar Coated sounds like a happy love song with its poppy beat, but it has a much deeper meaning hidden within the lyrics. Wish comes in hot with a scathing verse, ending with the line “Toss me to the curb/Girl I hope you found a good replacement.” The song themes around two people who break up but stay friends who agree to not be overly friendly, navigating the leftover anger and love they still have for each other.

Burn it Down blazes in hot, a true midwest emo anthem. When asked about the genre switch, GSpot stated, “Burn it down is a genre I feel my voice is comfortable in. Alternative has always been in my wheelhouse”. GSpot comes in with an adlib for a humorous break in the emotion, just to throw us into a charged chorus that will resonate with anyone who has been hurt by someone who tries to keep the bridge there. Wish returns for this track with scalding lines once again, like “throw this sh*t over replay/the only way you’re gonna hear my voice is through these songs.” There are obviously themes of cheating which comes from personal experience. His inspiration for this was when he was “cheated on and tried my best to keep a happy face so burn it down was the emotions I let build up. Pretty much stating everything we built we will watch it burn”.

The album rounds out with the most successful song on the EP, I’ll Try. This track hits deep for anyone who has ever felt like they were too much for someone else, proving that there is someone out there who will fight for you. GSpot starts the song as a lover who wants to take things slow and prove to his partner that he will work for the relationship. When asked about the process of writing this song he explained, “Sexuality has always been a confusing topic for me. I've never felt I knew where I belong. So the lyrics are saying I know you want it, and I think I do too, while I'm not confident I'll Try. I do feel the listener can also make their own interpretation of this song which is always a plus”. The chorus is an absolute earworm that won’t leave your brain, not that you’ll want it to. Barb floats in with a melodic verse from the other point of view, letting her anxieties melt away and letting herself be loved as she should be. Gspot attributes the success of this song to his featured artist, saying “her verse and vocal ability really pushed the song to a new level”.

Sugar Coated is an all around amazing album, taking the listener through a story charged with emotion. GSpot thanks his loyal listeners and both Barb and Wish for embarking on this journey with him. Listen to the entire album wherever you get your music, and let us know which is YOUR favorite!
